True Horror is Born in Portland

Whoa, what is this? A horror film festival in Portland? Indeed!

Portland Horror Film Festival will be the first independent horror film festival of its kind in the spooky Northwest city of Portland, OR. Our goal is to foster the next generation of innovative horror and dark fantasy, and drive amazing independent horror short and features into the eyeballs of the best movie-watching audience in the world!

The beautifully restored Hollywood Theatre is host to the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and now the Portland Horror Film Festival.

Born from H. P. Lovecraft and The Undead

Gwen and I have been successfully organizing film festivals in Portland since 2011. We’re the current festival directors for the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival® in Portland, for which we’ve organized the last five yearly installments, as well as a number of satellite events, like CthulhuCon PDX and the Best of the HPLFF in Portland, and film screenings elsewhere, like those held in Lovecraft’s hometown of Providence, in coordination with Necronomicon Providence.

We also organized Zompire: The Undead Film Festival™ for three years, from 2012-2014 (not dead, only resting), bringing the Best of the Dead to popcorn-munching Zombie/Vampire/Ghost enthusiasts.

Zompire: The Undead Film Festival is held at the Clinton St. Theater in SE Portland. In 2013, we featured the documentary “Dead Meat Walking” and the US Premiere of Japanese rock and roll zombie flick “Dead Banging”.

So, why have another horror film festival? How is this different?

Over the last several years, we’ve seen and exhibited some amazing Lovecraftian and Undead films… but we’ve also seen some amazing, super-innovative, scary-as-hell horror films that didn’t fit those categories, but which we couldn’t play at either of those festivals.

So, our goal here is simple: use our same instinct and aesthetic for choosing awesome independent films, without limiting the pool to any one sub-genre. Basically, we’re going to show the very best independent horror from all genres of cinematic terror, from supernatural horror to dark fantasy and everything in between. You might see some Cosmic Horror, you might see some Zombies and Vampires, but you’ll also probably see monsters from outer space, demons, devils, cabins in the woods, possession, cannibals, parallel dimensions, and anything else that might go bump in the aisles.

More importantly, you’ll get a look at terror you won’t likely ever see elsewhere, made by the new faces of horror from across the planet. How would you like to be there to see the newest horrors from not only Europe, but from Asia and the Middle East? This is stuff you’re not going to see at the multiplex… but it will be made by the best non-committee filmmakers in the world.

Don’t miss our inaugural event, June 1-2, 2016 at the Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, Oregon, 97212.
